ZITA UJHELYI-SEBESTYÉN ART

BIOGRAPHY
Zita Ujhelyi-Sebestyén (b. 1984, Budapest, Hungary) is a performance-based multidisciplinary artist based in Luzern, Switzerland. Her early life was shaped by family issues and the political transition in Hungary from 1989 to 1990, which marked the end of the socialist regime. This historical shift influenced her artistic development and continues to inform her creative work. She works across photography, drawing, collage, painting, and installation, incorporating influences from new media such as AI and video. Utilizing techniques such as cyanotype, monotype, collage, image transfer, and embroidery, her works are grounded in personal and historical narratives. Drawing from photography, literature, philosophy, personal experiences, and digital sources, her practice is influenced by conceptual art. Her use of cyanotype as an alternative photographic medium, along with her flower paintings, which are deeply influenced by Hungarian folk and runic script, showcases her ability to bridge traditional and experimental art forms.
Ujhelyi-Sebestyén’s work explores nature, politics, family, motherhood, womanhood, and psychological and social trauma, particularly as they relate to early childhood experiences. Through these themes, she weaves personal and political narratives into visual experiences. Her combination of cyanotype and paint has become a hallmark of her innovative approach, while her attention to human emotions and sociopolitical issues gives an edge of critical engagement that resonates across various contexts. Working primarily on paper, as well as acrylic and oil paintings on linen or cotton canvas, she also creates immersive installations that integrate ready-made objects and digital technology inspired by AI.
Her projects, comprises works on paper, canvas, and installation, forming a diverse body of work without a specific stylistic constraint but with a conceptual coherence in its theme. It is a body of work that explores solitude, scientific concepts in botanica, biology, philosophy, literature, and social conditions. These series are a profound reflection on both the physical and metaphorical dimensions of human condition and identity.
